Scope and Content Note

Log Mark Records from District Six, Fourteen, and Seventeen, 1864-1911 and undated, show bark mark and stamp, date recorded, and name of person registering the mark. Entries are chronological except for the microfilmed records which are generally alphabetical by the first letter in the mark. In some cases, the name of the person or firm to whom the logs were sold is included in the microfilm portion of these records.

In this category is a Camp Scale Record Book, 1881-1882, probably for District Six, which is a weekly record of logs scaled at various lumber camps, showing dates, name of camp, name of scaler, number of logs by size, total logs each week, and total number of feet. A Record of Timber Cutting Regions is and undated volume, organized by region, indicating name of region (probably all District Six), log marks, number of logs, number of feet, loggers, and owners.

The Legal Records, 1864-1894, all come from District Six and include eleven volume, in chronological order, containing log contracts, log liens, sales contracts, and other documents recorded by the inspector. Also in this series is a Contract Record Book, 1881-1886, for District Six consisting of printed forms of recording contracts between logging companies and individuals. Most are from the Chippewa Logging Company of Eau Claire. Each of these twelve volumes contains an index. Unbound papers, 1875-1927, from District Six include bills of sale of logs, sale contracts, log liens, chattel mortgages, transfer of log marks, warrants of attachment, oaths of deputies, logging agreements, reports of sales of mortgaged logs, reports of logs scaled, reports of salvaged logs, incoming correspondence, and record of adoption of log marks.

The Miscellaneous Records consist of two volumes, 1875-1927, from District Eleven containing a record of log marks, log contracts, sales contracts, log liens, salvage and scaling reports, and appointments of duties.
