Iverson-Carroll-Standish Family Papers, 1860-1961

Biography/History

This collection comprises papers belonging to several related families originating in the River Falls, Wisconsin area. The emphasis is on the Carroll and Iverson families, from whom most of the common relation-ships sprang. James Preston Carroll and Henrietta Iverson married and had one daughter, Mary Carroll Standish. Other family names mentioned are Anderson, Robbins, Larson, and Dale.

The Carroll family came to Pierce County from Indiana in the 1840's. James Preston Carroll, born in 1847, served in the Civil War and then began a dry goods store with his brothers in River Falls. Later they expanded into groceries and ultimately Carroll became sole owner. His first wife, Jennie E. Brackett, died in 1886. He married Henrietta Iverson in 1890, and their daughter Mary was born in 1903. The following year ill health forced Carroll to sell his business, and he died in 1906.

The Iverson family also settled in Pierce County in the 1840's and in the 1850's moved to Martell, Wisconsin where they maintained a farm until 1902. Hans Jacob Iverson, born in 1835, also served in the Civil War and then returned to his successful farm in Martell. He fathered eight children including Henrietta (1863-1949) and Johanna (1875-1955) who qualified as teachers at River Falls Normal School.

Of special note among the many other people related to these families is Andrew Larson. He was born in 1840 and died in 1945 and was an uncle of Henrietta Iverson Carroll and her brothers and sisters. A successful banker and realtor in Willmar, Minnesota, he was one of the last surviving Minnesota Civil War veterans.
