Spirit (Price County, Wis.: Town) Records, 1879-1987

Scope and Content Note

Clerk's record books document money paid out from town funds to individuals and businesses. The records are arranged chronologically.

Treasurer's record books contain accounts for teacher wages; highway, school, military benefits, library, cemetery, and bridge funds; reports to the town board; and the clerk's oaths and bonds of office.

The election record book includes oaths of the inspectors of elections, certificates of election listing the officers elected, poll lists, and the inspector's statement of the number of votes received per office.

Justice of the Peace dockets record primarily monetary disputes and some civil and criminal cases plus death inquests. Entries give the names of the plaintiffs and defendants, a summary of the case, and in some instances the witnesses' statements. In the back of one volume is a copy of the oaths given to jurors and to witnesses.

The plat book was compiled by the WPA and consists of a map for each section. Accompanying each map is a name index of land owners listing the parcel number, legal description, number of acres, and a reference to the deed volumes.
