Photographs, interviews, and other materials of John Newhouse, 1945-1974, a reporter
and photographer for the Wisconsin State Journal,
Madison, Wisconsin, consisting primarily of black and white 4x5 inch and 35 mm
negatives, made for the State Journal, including
extensive aerial views of Madison and the surrounding area. Other subjects include
the Monona Terrace and Convention Center project and the University of
Wisconsin-Hill Farms development. Two processed tape recordings are a November 26,
1956, interview with Newhouse by Clement Sylvestro of the Historical Society staff
concerning controversy over Madison police chief Bruce Weatherly which led to a 1956
disciplinary hearing. Newhouse dwells on the people involved, their political
ambitions, and related issues such as court treatment of juveniles and a survey by
the Northwest Traffic Institute, and gives his own favorable impression of
Weatherly. Also included are clippings of articles by Newhouse addressing Madison
issues, especially Frank Lloyd Wright's Monona Terrace Project, the Monona Basin
Project, Madison city planning, and the Madison Public Housing Authority; and a
small amount of personal correspondence from University of Wisconsin biochemist Karl
Paul Link.
