John Newhouse Photographs, Interviews and Other Materials, 1945-1974

Scope and Content Note

Photographs, interviews, and other materials of John Newhouse, 1945-1974, a reporter and photographer for the Wisconsin State Journal, Madison, Wisconsin, consisting primarily of black and white 4x5 inch and 35 mm negatives, made for the State Journal, including extensive aerial views of Madison and the surrounding area. Other subjects include the Monona Terrace and Convention Center project and the University of Wisconsin-Hill Farms development. Two processed tape recordings are a November 26, 1956, interview with Newhouse by Clement Sylvestro of the Historical Society staff concerning controversy over Madison police chief Bruce Weatherly which led to a 1956 disciplinary hearing. Newhouse dwells on the people involved, their political ambitions, and related issues such as court treatment of juveniles and a survey by the Northwest Traffic Institute, and gives his own favorable impression of Weatherly. Also included are clippings of articles by Newhouse addressing Madison issues, especially Frank Lloyd Wright's Monona Terrace Project, the Monona Basin Project, Madison city planning, and the Madison Public Housing Authority; and a small amount of personal correspondence from University of Wisconsin biochemist Karl Paul Link.
