Oconto County War History Commission: World War II Military Service Data Sheets, ca. 1945-1948

Scope and Content Note

This collection originally contained two sets of data sheets. When processed, only the copy with the most complete information was retained. If the copies were different, both were retained. In order to conserve space, when information on one sheet supplemented the other sheet, it was simply added and indicated in brackets on the sheet that was retained.

It appears that some photos were lost before coming into archival custody. Therefore, a data sheet may indicate that a photograph is included, but it is not. For some individuals, the data sheet indicates that a photo is not present, but actually it is. In this case the appropriate box on the form is marked with a penciled checkmark in brackets.

It appears that the Oconto County War History Commission created these records under the direction of the County Historian, ca. 1946-1948. The Commission apparently followed the advice on collecting information given in the "War Records Manual" prepared by the War Records Commission of the Wisconsin State Council of Defense. We believe the County Commission sent out the data sheets based on a roster of service persons' names. The individual, their spouse, or a relative the provided the information. One folder of correspondence regarding the project and news clippings related to Oconto County's role in the war is included in this series.
