Outagamie County (Wis.). Sheriff: Register of Prisoners, 1895-1955

Scope and Content Note

Entries in Volume [1], 1895-1924, Volume [2], 1924-1941, lists the prisoner's name, residence, physical description, age, date committed, offense, time and authority of release, and nationality. Entries in Volumes [3]-[9], 1941-1955, give the same information plus the prisoner's occupation, religion, and previous arrests. Volumes [3]-[9] include a name index at the front of the volume.

Volume [10], 1913-circa 1933, appears to be an account of Appleton residents imprisoned for abandonment and non-support and the labor they performed to pay the aggrieved parties. The volume is indexed by last name and contains a physical and demographic description of prisoner, date committed, by whom, cause, term, time actually served, date released, dependents, earnings to be paid and to whom, account of money earned and nature of work and wages.

Volume [11], 1932-1934, is titled “Jail Register” and gives a name and date for 1932 entries, and for entries made in 1933 and 1934 adds the place of residence, sometimes the age and occupation, and the number of linens used. The persons listed are not the same as in Volume [2] that covers the same time period and this is unrelated.
