Fond du Lac County Conservation Alliance Records, 1961-1968

Biography/History

The Fond du Lac County (Wis.) Conservation Alliance (FCCA) was founded in May 1961 to promote better conservation and wildlife management. Members are concerned local organizations, such as the East Shore Conservation Club, the Fond du Lac Gun Club, the North Fond du Lac Rod and Gun Club, the Oakfield Conservation Club, the Van Dyne Sportsmen's Club, the Wescot Sportsmen's Club, the West Shore Rod and Gun Club, and the South Shore Conservation Club. Two delegates from each member organization have voting privileges although any number of representatives may attend meetings. Alliance officers consist of a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer.

The Alliance has assumed an active role in a variety of conservation causes. Their activities have ranged from showing informative films at meetings, to engaging the City of Fond du Lac in a battle before the Wisconsin Public Service Commission on its waste disposal practices. Some specific concerns have been Canada goose hunting at Horicon Marsh, preservation of Supple Marsh as a wildlife area, and maintenance of local waters free of pollution and at normal levels.

A leader of the Alliance between 1961 and 1968 was John L. Franson, Fond du Lac, who served first as secretary and than president. He also was the Alliance representative to the Wisconsin Resource Conservation Council and served as chairman pro tem of the Sixth District Advisory Committee to the National Rivers and Harbors Congress, organized at the request of Congressman John Race.
