Lawrence F. Jones Papers, 1926-1973

Scope and Content Note

The papers of Lawrence F. Jones are organized in two parts. The material in Part 1 was received between 1958 and 1965 and arranged in 1967; most of the material in Part 2 was received in 1975 and 1977. Each part primarily is arranged into two subseries: GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE and SUBJECT FILE.

Part 1, 1926-1954

Part 1 includes correspondence, 1930-1953, and subject folders relating to Jones' responsibilities as a city commissioner of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The correspondence, 1930-1953, is all official and primarily concerns the administration of the Garbage, Sewage, and Water Departments. Mr. Jones wrote many letters to other cities and companies requesting information on different methods of administration in order to incorporate new ideas and techniques in Fond du Lac. He also requested and received similar information on tax systems, city budgets, and municipal salaries. This correspondence is arranged chronologically by month.

The subject folders contain financial information, administrative orders, and mimeographed information relevant to the subject. The Garbage, Sewage, Water, and Library Departments files are most complete and the budget and comptroller's reports files are also quite complete for the period from 1930 to 1950.

Part 2, 1929-1975

Again the papers are official rather than personal, primarily relating to Jones's responsibilities as a city commissioner, 1935-1953. His other major interests, such as the Wisconsin Association of Cooperatives and the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), are also reflected in the Subject File. A folder of biographical materials is present, and oversize materials are filed in Box 8.
