Milton B. Freudenheim Papers, 1947-1978

Scope and Content Note

The Freudenheim papers document Freudenheim's early professional career as a journalist for several newspapers. The materials date from 1947-1978, with the bulk of the collection pertaining to Freudenheim's work as a foreign services correspondent at the Chicago Daily News. The collection consists of correspondence, financial records, writings, personal and visual materials. The papers have been divided into three series: PROFESSIONAL, PERSONAL, and VISUAL MATERIALS.

The PROFESSIONAL series includes three sub-series: Correspondence, Financial Records, and Writings. The Correspondence papers include two separate sets of records arranged by correspondence to and from Freudenheim and correspondence regarding the Chicago Daily News foreign services. These files document Freudenheim's correspondence before his time as Chief of Foreign Services and the correspondence of the Foreign Services Bureau. Some of these letters are written in French. The Financial Records include sets of records arranged by correspondence and statements regarding the bureau. These materials are mostly written in French and document the financial workings of the Foreign Services Bureau during the years of 1948-1977. The Writings include two sets of records separated by creator, specifically materials created by the bureau and materials created by Freudenheim. In those sub-series are sub-series of the types of writings. Freudenheim's writings are broken up into newspaper articles and manuscripts. The bureau's writings include articles, published materials such as a stylebook and newsletters, and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings of Paul Ghali's articles (a fellow foreign services journalist of Freudenheim's). These documents include newspaper clippings, transcripts, published works, articles, notebooks, and manuscripts. They have been arranged chronologically by year with no internal chronological arrangement, except for Freudenheim's manuscripts, which have been arranged thoroughly by month and day. The newspaper clippings are from both, the Akron Beacon Journal and the Chicago Daily News but are not completely separated from each other. During the early 1960s Freudenheim was writing for both newspaper companies.

The PERSONAL series is divided into two sub-series: Correspondence and Miscellaneous. The Correspondence sub-series includes letters from Freudenheim to his wife while he was in Europe at various times in his career. The Miscellaneous sub-series includes a passport, address book, personal documents, and invitations to special events throughout Freudenheim's career.

The VISUAL MATERIALS series is divided into two sub-series: Professional photographs and negatives as well as Personal photographs and negatives. The Professional photographs and negatives include pictures of Freudenheim at events and professionally taken headshots. The Personal photographs and negatives are the bulk of the VISUAL MATERIALS series, including images of Freudenheim and his wife, images of their first baby, and home life.
