In the early 1970s a group of Milwaukee's Inner City artists began to meet at Martin
Luther King Library. The group's purpose was to encourage the artistic development
of its members. The group started as the Central City Artists & Craftsmen
Association but later became known as the Freewheelers. In 1976, they had their
first exhibition. Major events included a group exhibition at the Charles Allis Art
Library and an annual Summer Art Fair at King Library.
