Scope and Content Note

The records, which are fragmentary in some respects, are arranged into three groups: Organizational Papers, General Papers, and Conference Papers. Organizational Papers consist of one folder of proposals for establishing the organization in Madison on models from NACLA and the United Ministry for Higher Education. General Papers, 1971-1974, include miscellaneous correspondence concerning circulation and distribution of the newsletter, requests for information about Latin America, and arrangements with various film distributors. Further correspondence, as well as notes and minutes, relate to CALA's participation in NICH, NCCSC, and NCCSC's independent anti-imperialist caucus. Of special note is a series of letters about the editorials in various papers concerning the Allende regime.

Publications in the collection include brochures, leaflets, handouts, and copies of the group's Chilean news summaries, many of which were distributed under joint sponsorship with NICH. Copies of the CALA Newsletter and The Kennecott Mining Corporation and Mining Development in Northern Wisconsin (1973), by Al Gedicks, CALA research director, have been transferred to the Society Library. Other than the Gedicks' title, no material in the collection directly points to CALA's research activities.
