Ernest and Sena Hein Papers, circa 1916-1971 (bulk 1930-1971)

Biography/History

Ernest Hein was born November 22, 1888 in Pomerania, Germany, the son of August and Johanna Teidel Hein. Ernest (Ernst) came to Tigerton, Wisconsin, with his family in 1891, at the age of 3. Sena Elina Midthun was born February 26, 1887 in Norway Grove, Wisconsin. The Heins were married June 17, 1914, and had two daughters: Violette (Mrs. Frederick Gundlach), born September 18, 1916; and Lucille, born June 11, 1915. Ernest was a machinist for the Scanlan-Morris Company of Madison from 1919 until 1929. Around 1930, the Heins opened a small bakery at 2506 East Washington Avenue in Madison. In 1934, the business known as “Hein's Home Bakery,” was located at 1353 Williamson Street, where it remained until about 1948 or 1950. After closing the bakery, Ernest did carpentry and odd jobs, including the building of several homes in Madison and Monona, until his retirement in 1963. Ernest Hein died May 2, 1971 in Madison, and Sena died July 6, 1975 in Platteville, Wisconsin.
