Scope and Content Note

The collection is organized in two parts. Part I consists of the materials received in 1969 and organized in 1975. Part II consists of materials received in 1978 and organized and added in 1988.

PART I: MATERIALS ORGANIZED IN 1975. Box 1-39

Part I of the records, 1931-1962, of ACA, Local 10 contain correspondence, minutes, bulletins, ballots, petitions, financial records, union publications, reports, leaflets, and various documents such as agreements, arbitration decisions, and labor legislation. They are arranged chronologically by year, with subjects in alphabetical order under each year. The documents form a fairly complete record of all of the major activities and issues of concern to the union.

Most materials such as correspondence, grievance materials, and meeting and negotiation papers are filed under the name of the company with which they are concerned. The folders titled broadly as “General Correspondence,” “Grievances,” and “Meetings” contain materials pertaining to Local 10 as a whole or unidentified as to the specific company involved. Correspondence with other ACA locals and the national ACA is filed separately in appropriate folders.

PART II: MATERIALS ADDED IN 1988. Box 40-42

The 1988 additions to the records ACA Local 10 cover the period 1938-1971, although they focus primarily on the 1960's. The files include administrative records, subject files, and miscellany. Unlike the original accession, which was arranged first chronologically and then filed in an alphabetical subject file, this small addition is only subdivided alphabetically.

Administrative record include by-laws, minutes and correspondence. There are two separate files of minutes. One file contains minutes of the election committee, March-July, 1968, which primarily pertains to ACA's 1968 affiliation with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and to Local 10's procedure of electing members to Teamster offices. The second file contains minutes of the regular membership meetings and covers the period 1945-1971. The correspondence, 1943-1971, generally contains letters to and from the international and letters to the members of Local 10 from its headquarters in New York which kept its membership informed on all ACA union news.

The majority of the subject files consists of records pertaining to RCA Communications (RCAC). These include correspondence, agreements, proposals, and arbitration files. Also included in the RCAC subject files are records documenting labor-management negotiations regarding minimum rates, 1968-1969, and a retirement plan, 1966-1970. Both of these contain of minutes, correspondence, agreements, wage scales and miscellany. The RCA subject files additionally include a company newsletter entitled Management Newsletter, 1969-1970, and records pertaining to workers at RCA in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the miscellaneous file are records pertaining to policies of attendance, RCAC annual reports(1969-1970), labor organization annual reports(1965-1966), a notice of new nominations and election of officers and a report of the balloting committee on election of a shop committee (1968), and various newsletters and newsclippings.
