This collection contains records from the City of Milwaukee’s 4th District Alderman,
Paul A. Henningsen. Most records date from his Aldermanic tenure, 1983-2003,
although some have been retained from his predecessor, Kevin O’Connor. The original
subject headings from aldermanic staff have been kept intact as much as possible.
This collection includes reports, statistics, publications, correspondence,
handwritten notes, drafts/copies of ordinances and newspaper clippings. Some of the
largest subjects include construction proposals by Marquette University’s Avenue
Commons project and the transfer of the former Indian Community School of Milwaukee
campus on 31st St. between Highland St. and State St. to a federal government trust
for the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe. Prior to the Community School, the site was
Concordia College’s Milwaukee campus until it relocated. Other substantially
represented topics include Milwaukee Police Department, gun control, nuisance
properties involved in legal action and the Minority Business Enterprise Program.
There are also significant materials on the City’s research into the riverwalk or
skywalk development downtown. Some of these early 1960s-1970s dated documents are
copies of maps used for planning purposes. Most of the photographs are undated but
appear to be from Henningsen’s time as an Alderman and as a Milwaukee County
Supervisor. There are also a few items such as the article on Robert Kasten and some
speeches that also predate his Aldermanic term.
