Milwaukee Drug Clerks' Association Records, 1894-1895

Biography/History

In January, 1894, a group of men formed The Milwaukee Drug Clerks' Association in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and incorporated the organization the following July. Its stated purpose was “to promote the study and practice of the science of pharmacy, to advance its members in the drug business, and to conduct, under its auspices, such social meetings and entertainments as may from time to time be thought fit.” Active members were to include only drug clerks and apprentice clerks over eighteen who had at least two years of experience. Provision was made for associate and honorary members.

The two volumes in this collection contain the organization's minutes, its articles of organization, a resolution, and a list of members. These show that the group had regular meetings, with a doctor often being invited to speak. It was active until July, 1895, when the members voted to sell the furniture and move to cheaper quarters. Thereafter, few meetings were held, and nothing is recorded after October 18, 1895.
