Haskell Noyes Papers, 1924-1943

Biography/History

Haskell Noyes, Milwaukee businessman, was for many years an active leader in the Wisconsin conservation movement. In 1925 he served as president of the Wisconsin division of the Izaak Walton League of America, and in 1928 was chairman of the national executive committee of the League. He resigned this position when, in the same year, Governor Zimmerman appointed him to the State Conservation Commission. His appointment was renewed by Governor Kohler, and in 1931 Noyes became chairman of the Commission upon the retirement of William Maughe. In 1932 he was appointed to the federal advisory committee on the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. In 1933 he resigned this post to return to his private insurance firm. His interest in conservation continued, however. By 1936 various friends and fellow conservationists sought to promote Noyes for the Republican party nomination for lieutenant governor.
