St. Peter's Lutheran Church (Town of Clifton, Monroe County, Wisconsin) Records, 1868-1967

Biography/History

The St. Peter's congregation was organized by German settlers and commonly known as the Clifton church or the Indian Creek church. Though sermons were preached in area homes beginning in 1862, the church officially formed in 1865 and was served by the Reverend John Hoyer who preached every third Sunday. The first church was dedicated in 1869 and a parsonage was added about 1886. A new church was built in 1896. Sharing the pastor with other congregations from the beginning, St. Peter's was in a charge with Dorset Ridge, South Ridge and Wilton from 1873 to 1889, and just with Dorset Ridge, 1889-??. In 1903, members of St. Peter's who lived in Juneau County formed a new congregation, St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, which was served by the St. Peter's pastor. The church used the German language until 1912, when it became bilingual.
