Scope and Content Note: Papers, circa 1965-1975 and 2015, of Betty Johnson of Janesville, Wisconsin, concerning her efforts to improve the care of the mentally disabled at state facilities. The papers include Betty's five scrapbooks detailing the family's efforts to help her son with disabilities, his experiences at Southern Colony, the fundraising and work with local and state mental organizations and her son's death in 1967. Also included are other reports and publications such as the "Wisconsin State Plan for Construction of Mental Health Facilities" (1968-1969), "Guidelines for Action in Mental Health and Retardation" (1965), the "Beloit Public Schools Practices and Procedures to Facilitate the Implementation of Chapter 115 of the Wisconsin Statutes" (1975), and Betty's remembrance, A Personal Story on Behalf of Handicapped Children (2015).
