The Michael Philippi papers document his career as a lighting and set designer. The
majority of the collection consists of technical production materials such as light plots,
hanging plots, ground and section plans, preset and cue sheets, track sheets, focus charts,
hook ups, cheat sheets, set designs, prop plots, and elevations, along with some
correspondence, productions schedules, scripts, reviews, reference materials, and
photographs. The collection has been divided into three series: PRODUCTIONS, GENERAL and
VISUAL MATERIALS.
The PRODUCTIONS series is further divided into: Lighting Design; Set Design; Set and
Lighting Design; Set, Lighting and Costume Design; and Unidentified Productions. The plays
are listed alphabetically in each section, with the theater where the play was produced and
year of production. The UNIDENTIFIED series consists of material for productions in which
the title, date and theater where produced are unclear.
The GENERAL series consists of reviews for productions along with copies of Philippi's
résumé portfolio, a scrapbook, and miscellaneous materials.
The VISUAL MATERIALS series is divided into Photographs, Transparencies, and Negatives
documenting various productions and places he photographed for reference purposes. The
negatives are all color. The transparencies and negatives are listed in the order in which
they appear in the boxes and folders, and are not in alphabetical order. Additional images
and designs have been saved as jpegs and pdfs; please speak to an archivist for access to
the electronic files.
