Biography/History

Positions held by Crowley include president of General Paper Company, Madison, 1919; president of the Madison Bank of Wisconsin (later merged into State Bank of Wisconsin), 1928-1932; chairman of State Banking Review Board, 1932; first chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (1934-1945); president and chairman of the board of Standard Gas and Electric Company, a nation-wide utility system (1939-1947); member of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's war cabinet; Alien Property Custodian (1942-1944); head of the Office of Economic Warfare (later reorganized within the Foreign Economic Administration); and chairman of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Rail Road until his retirement (December 1945-1970).
