Records, 1920-1980, of the Dane County United Way representative, which coordinates the social and welfare activities of its member agencies. The records trace the history of the United Way and its predecessors and associated organizations and documents social welfare planning and the history of philanthropy in Dane County. Included in the collection are bound volumes of minutes and related board records, annual campaign records and scrapbooks, member agency files (documenting their activities and finances), labor union files (documenting cooperative projects), committee materials, programs and classes, and several reports and surveys. Originally incorporated in 1922 as the Madison Community Union (later Madison Community Chest), it merged with the United Givers Fund in 1953 to form the United Community Chest which was reorganized and renamed the United Way of Dane County in 1971. Records include those of the Madison War Chest, 1942-1947, and the Community Welfare Council of Madison which was affiliated with the Madison War Chest and became the Dane County Social Planning Agency in 1969.
