Pew Center for Civic Journalism: Records, 1992-2003

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Pew Center for Civic Journalism consist mainly of the JAMES K. BATTEN AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN CIVIC JOURNALISM series that consists of entries from 1995-2002, which includes information about each individual project with accompanying exhibit material. Arranged by year and individual Batten Award number, the completeness of each entry varies in depth, and may include tearsheets, video and tape recordings, photographs, CD-ROMs, and other formats. The subjects include race relations, crime, alcoholism, poverty, AIDS, sprawl, transportation, voting issues, election coverage, education, housing, health, and drugs and violence. There is a master index, as well as speeches, agendas, and news releases arranged by year and Batten Award number.

Batten Award winners include the Argus Leader, Asbury Park Press, Baltimore Sun, Bradenton Herald, the Charlotte Observer, Chronicle Tribune, Democrat and Chronicle/Times Union, the Eagle Tribune, the Herald-Dispatch of Huntington and West Virginia Public Broadcasting, Idaho Statesman, Kansas City Star, New Hampshire Public Radio, Peoria Journal Star, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Portland Press Herald, San Francisco Chronicle, Savannah Morning News, St. Paul Pioneer Press, and the Wisconsin State Journal.
