This collection contains records from various divisions of the Milwaukee Road
Operations Department covering a variety of topics. Some series only have a few
folders while others are much larger. The Chicago Division records include
information about the changes made in the schedules and rules of many classes of
railroad workers in the early part of the 20th century, as well as records related
to the Milwaukee Road’s connection with the Kansas City South Railroad. Also
contains correspondence of the Office of the Vice President of Personnel. The
Dubuque & Illinois Division series consists of waybills from Chillicothe, MO,
and special orders. The Iowa Division records contain contracts and correspondence.
The La Crosse Division records include circular letters, correspondence between
stations and the superintendent, as well as the superintendent’s correspondence.
Some of these files also contain various drawings and photographs. Also included are
circular letters, damage claims, and personnel matters.
The Madison Division series consists of fuel reports, track issues, and
miscellaneous correspondence. The Milwaukee Division series consists of records
related to Amtrak in the 1970s and subject files that illustrate the Milwaukee
Road’s dealings with various Milwaukee businesses. Also included are various reports
and correspondence on matters such as safety, labor, and budgets. The Publications
series consists of publications that cover a wide range of railroad-related
activities, including a significant amount of published rules for many classes of
railway employees as well as other manuals and instructions. The Washington Division
records primarily consist of employee-related matters, such as holiday and vacation
pay, union agreements, and schedules. The last series contains miscellaneous items
from various divisions, such as order books, signal books, and correspondence.
