Kenosha County (Wis). Clerk: Clerk's General Records, 1858-1964

Arrangement of the Materials

The materials in boxes 1-82 were received and processed before the acquisition of the material in boxes 83-100. Consequently, the dates of the latter boxes overlap those of the first segment.

  • Records in boxes 1-4 date 1858-1891 and are arranged chronologically.
  • Records in boxes 5-37 date 1891-1924 and are arranged by year, then by subject.
  • Records in boxes 37-82 cover primarily 1925-1947 with a few materials extending to 1964); they are arranged chronologically in groups established usually twice a year, and within each group by file number (see next paragraph).
  • Boxes 83-100 contain materials dated 1863-1922 and are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Beginning with the year 1925 a numerical index was used. Twice each year the clerk began a new series of file numbers starting with the number (1). Selection of the file numbers seems to have been arbitrary, and the numbers differ each year for the same subjects or folder titles.
