Federal Writers' Project: Oneida Culture Oral History Project Records, 1940-1942

Scope and Content Note

The collection has been organized in four series: Notebooks, Employment Eligibility Surveys, Maps, and Newspaper Digests.

The NOTEBOOKS series (1941-1942) contains notes from interviews of Oneida tribe members conducted by fellow tribe members. These bound notebooks are arranged by interviewer -- primarily Guy Elm, Andrew Beachtree, David Skenandore, Hyson Doxtator, Ida Blackhawk, John Skenandore, Oscar Archiquette, Stadler King, Sherman Skenandore and William Metoxen. Subjects covered in the interviews include Oneida history, people living in Oneida, religion, family life, economic conditions, education, medicine, hunting, fishing, recreation, Workers Alliance, Oneida Indian Cooperative Association, Six Nations Confederacy, stories and jokes. Some of the interviews are written in the Oneida language (designated by [Oneida] in the container list), a few of which have English translations.

The EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY SURVEYS series (1940-1942) contains handwritten, transcribed, and typewritten surveys of Oneida men. The surveys focus on education level and work experience and were conducted by the same Oneida tribe members who conducted the Notebook interviews.

The MAPS series contains hand drawn maps, section maps, and section map worksheets of the area surrounding Oneida Village. There are section maps of towns 22, 23, and 24 in Outagamie County and Brown County that are marked with Indian claims and Oneida family residences. Hand drawn maps of Oneida Village showing locations of schools, businesses, churches, and homes are included. The hand drawn and section maps are undated. Rounding out this series are worksheets completed in December 1941 that give the location of property owned by Oneida tribe members. These worksheets were used to locate Oneida residences on the section maps and provide information including the owner of the land and how they came to purchase it.

The NEWSPAPER DIGESTS series contains an index card file of citations to the Green Bay Gazette from 1898 to 1904 and from 1931 to 1940. The subjects of the cited articles are all Oneida related and include crime, construction, social news, economic conditions and education.
