National Railroad Museum Records, 1956-1959

Scope and Content Note

This portion of the records of the National Railroad Museum contains papers from the office of Harold T. I. Shannon, Information Executive of the Museum. Included are correspondence, memoranda, press releases, and clippings, 1956-1959. The records cover administrative plans, publicity, fund raising, and attempts to get Congressional recognition as THE national railroad museum. A major deterrent to this recognition was the opposition of the Museum of Transport at St. Louis, Missouri. Most correspondence is with former and present railroad employees who applied for Museum membership, and with executives of railroad organizations and publications.
