Eldred Klauser Papers, 1861-1935

Biography/History

Eldred Klauser was a member of the politically important Eldred family of Milwaukee, which was instrumental in the early history of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. Eldred Klauser was born in March 1888. He was educated at the Milwaukee Academy.

In the summer of 1911, he began working for the Anson Eldred Co., Stiles, Wisconsin, as a farm manager. When he arrived, Klauser found the farm in extremely poor condition, and having lost money for many years. While it is not known whether Klauser ever studied agriculture in college as he intended, he frequently sent queries to the agriculture professors at the University of Wisconsin. During the 1920's, Klauser became secretary of the Anson Eldred Lumber Co., Stiles, Wisconsin.
