Mr. Lucky Films, 1960

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of five 16 mm film reels from the half-hour dramatic television series Mr. Lucky, which aired on CBS from 1959 to 1960. The series featured John Vivyan as Joe Adams, alias Mr. Lucky, a suave but honest professional gambler who figures out how to operate a casino (the Fortuna ) without breaking the law. Along with his business partner Andamo (played by Ross Martin) Mr. Lucky runs his casino on a yacht moored in international waters outside the three-mile limit. Mr. Lucky is perhaps best remembered for featuring the music talents of composer Henry Mancini.

A total of 34 episodes were produced for Mr. Lucky over its one year run. However, this collection contains only five original episodes from the series, consisting of 16 mm black and white prints with sound, including the episode titled “Operation Fortuna,” sometimes referred to as “Anniversary Party,” which features Jack Nicholson in his first television performance. Two of the five episodes also contain original commercials for products such as All detergent, Praise soap, and Life cigarettes. Each reel runs approximately twenty to thirty minutes each. The visual quality of these prints is very good in general, but varies between individual reels.
