Scope and Content Note

Tax rolls are the record made by clerks of taxation districts from corrected assessment roll, showing complete list of taxable property in district arranged in order as to lots and blocks and sections and parts of sections by descriptions and valuations thereof, entered opposite the name of person to whom assessed; also a complete alphabetical list of all persons having taxable personal property with aggregate valuations, and number of school district in which subject to taxation; list of public lands sold and not patented and lands mortgaged to the State; opposite each tract, the taxes unpaid for previous year, if any; statement showing amounts of taxes levied upon districts and purpose; opposite each valuation, the amount to be raised thereon for State, county, school district, town or village, and all other taxes, and purpose for which raised; list of special assessments opposite lots or tracts upon which same may be a lien; with attached warrants ordering local treasurer to collect taxes set down in roll.

Most volumes in this series are tax rolls. Records are available on microfilm only, except for the following municipalities where the original paper documents were retained as well: Town of Superior, 1856-1858; Town of Pokegama, 1859; Town of Nemadji, 1859-1861; and Towns of Amnicon, Bennett, Brule, Gordon, Hawthorn, Highland, Lake Nebagamon, Lakeside, Maple, Parkland, Solon Springs, and South Range, 1910; and the following records which were not microfilmed and only the original documents are available: City of Superior property and income tax rolls, 1915-1927. Remaining originals were discarded after microfilming.
