Room 222 Films, 1969-1973

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of fifteen episodes from the half-hour television series Room 222, which aired on ABC from 1969 to 1974. The dramatic-comedy series focused on an American history class at the fictional Walt Whitman High School in Los Angeles, California. The class, held in room 222, was taught by Pete Dixon played by Lloyd Haynes and featured recurring characters such as the school's guidance counselor, Liz McIntyre (Denise Nicholas); the dryly humorous principal, Seymour Kaufman (Michael Constantine); and the enthusiastic Alice Johnson (Karen Valentine), a student teacher. Mr. Dixon delivered lessons on tolerance and understanding and episodes often reflected the political climate of the time including themes such as the Vietnam War, women's rights, race relations, and Watergate. However, plots were generally timeless and featured common teenage themes that dealt with parent-teenager issues and gender roles.

While approximately a total of 112 episodes of Room 222 aired on ABC during its five season run, this collection contains only 15 of the original episodes from all five seasons. All the reels in this collection are 16 mm color prints with sound and have a running time of approximately thirty minutes per episode. The visual quality of these prints is generally good overall although the quality differs between individual reels with several of the color prints showing visible signs of deterioration.
