The Loretta Young Show Films, 1953-1961

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of 250 episodes from the half-hour television anthology series The Loretta Young Show, which ran on NBC for eight seasons from 1953 to 1961. The series hosted by, and frequently starring, actress Loretta Young is probably best remembered for Young's fashions and swirling entrance through a door at the beginning of each episode. During its first season the series was titled A Letter to Loretta, and consisted of Young reading a letter supposedly written by a viewer and served as the introduction to each episode. In 1954 this device was dropped and for the next seven seasons Young provided an umprompted introduction for each episode. The show was produced by Loretta Young and her husband Tom Lewis's production company Lewislor Enterprises for the first five seasons then later by Young's own production company Toreto Enterprises.

While a total of approximately 258 episodes of The Loretta Young Show aired on NBC over its eight year run, this collection contains only 250 of the original episodes (259 reels) from all eight seasons, including two unaired episodes. The bulk of this collection consists of 16 mm black and white prints. However, the collection also contains 35 mm black and white prints for four episodes. Some episodes also contain original commercials for products such as Lilt, Tide, and Camay. Each reel runs approximately twenty to thirty minutes each. The visual quality of these prints is very good in general, but varies between individual reels.
