Circular Letters: United Artists Corporation Records, Series 1H, 1936-1943, 1949-1950

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of “circular letters,” that is, informational correspondence distributed more or less widely to the personnel of the corporation in multiple copies. For instance, circular letters from Paul Lazarus, a sales executive, discuss what pictures to sell, when to sell them, and under what prices and terms. Letters from Harry Gold, Eastern Division sales manager, deal with the market potential of individual films and the best techniques for selling them. Letters from the Print Department treat the circulation of prints among the various exchanges. Other frequently found subject matter concerns the success of various pictures, proper office procedures, requests for charitable donations, and exhortations to sell more pictures on better terms.

Circular letters were distributed to various classes of recipients: some went to all employees, some only to branch, sales or office managers (sometimes restricted to specific geographic areas), some to a limited number of specific executives.
