Uihlein Family Papers, 1810-1994

Biography/History

August Uihlein was born in Germany in 1842. His grandfather took him to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where his uncle, August Krug, had a brewery. Krug’s brewery became the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company after his death in 1858. The control, and later ownership, of the brewery passed to August Uihlein and his brothers in 1875. August was secretary and chairman of the board from 1874-1911. In addition to the brewery, August was also involved in banking and real estate. He died in 1911.

Robert August Uihlein was born 26 January 1883, the son of August and Emily Uihlein. He married Mary Stevens Ilsley on 18 September 1913. She was the daughter of James K. Ilsley, President of Marshall & Ilsley Bank. They had two children, Robert Jr. and Mary. Like his father, Uihlein worked at the Schlitz Brewing Company and served as vice president and director. Robert was a director at First Wisconsin National Bank as well. He died 13 May 1959.

Robert August Uihlein, Junior, was born 26 March 1916 to Robert Sr. and Mary Uihlein. He married Lorraine Glaeser on 31 January 1950. Uihlein Jr. joined the family business in 1942, became president of Schlitz in 1961, and chairman of the board in 1967. Robert was an avid polo player and co-founder of the Milwaukee Polo Club. Robert was also part of the group that brought the Brewers baseball team, then the Seattle Pilots, to Milwaukee in 1970. He died 12 November 1976.
