McBurney Disability Resource Center collection

Scope and Contents

The McBurney Disability Resource Center records provide an overview of the internal and external activities of the center from its inception in 1977 until 2006. The types of materials include reports, publications, accessibility maps, meeting minutes, correspondence, photographs, programs, conference proceedings, data, press releases, clippings, audio cassettes, and slides. Reports outline the annual activities of the center from 1982 to 1994, the outcomes of specific projects like the adaptive computer lab or programs that serve students with learning disabilities, accessibility on campus, and general statistics on disabled students both served by the McBurney center and across the University of Wisconsin system. The publications include pamphlets, fliers, academic papers, newsletters, and magazines. They include academic papers written by McBurney Center Director Trey Duffy, the center's newsletter SPECTRUM which featured articles by students with disabilities, and publications from partners like the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. The accessibility maps outline inaccessible areas of campus and are filed with reports on interventions necessary to make them more accessible. One set of campus maps distributed to students includes accessible locations on campus. The meeting minutes document the day to day activities of the McBurney Center and the implementation of programs, budgetary concerns, and staffing. They also include meeting minutes for a variety of on campus organizations including the Chancellor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities, Disability Action Committee, and the Mental Health Services Providing Committee. The minutes also cover the activities of professional organizations such as the Association on Higher Education and Disability. The correspondents include McBurney Center staff such as Trey Duffy and other stakeholders on campus including faculty, administrators, and disabled students. The photographs mostly document McBurney Awards Recognition Ceremonies and award recipients. Conference materials document staff participation in relevant conferences such as Progress Towards a Barrier Free Environment and workshops presented by staff such as Self Advocacy for Disabled Students. Press releases and some clippings document controversies such as Brigid McGuire's protests against inaccessible classrooms and parking. The audio cassettes include radio public service announcements and the slides are for a presentation entitled (Dis)abling Images: Representations of Disability in American Culture.
