Biography/History

Manuel Gottlieb (1913-1988) was born in California and initially moved to Milwaukee in the 1940s. He married Margaret Rush (1918-2007) in 1944 and had 4 children. He was a Professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. In 1960 Gottlieb worked with Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier as part of the Maier “brain trust”, a group of professors the mayor consulted with during his mayoral campaign. Although in 1967-68 he ran unsuccessfully against Maier for Mayor, he stayed active in politics even after defeat. He was a close, longtime friend of former Milwaukee Mayor Frank P. Zeidler. Gottlieb eventually moved to Seattle, Washington where he passed away in 1988. Manuel and Margaret are buried in Margaret’s home state of Indiana.
