"Bird Lives!" aired on Wisconsin Public Radio's Wisconsin Educational Radio Network (WERN) broadcast and was hosted by Michael Hanson and former UW-Madison professor Lawrence Gushee. This collection contains volumes 4 through 13 on 10 1/4" audio reel-to-reel tapes, which ran from June 25, 1976 to August 27, 1976.

The subject of the program is jazz musician Charlie Parker, also known as Yardbird and Bird, who was born in Kansas City, Kansas on August 29th, 1920. At age 11, Parker began playing the saxophone, and worked as a musician until his death on March 12, 1955. Parker was an American jazz soloist, saxophonist, and composer, who became a leading figure in the development of a form of jazz known as bebop, which became the foundation of modern jazz.
