Multicultural Student Center records

Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials created between 1985 and 2018 that document the activities, organization, and creation of the Multicultural Student Center. Collection materials generally fall into four broad areas: Advisory Board materials, documentation related to diversity and discrimination on campus, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

Materials from the Advisory Board include meeting agendas, meeting minutes, board member lists, board member election materials, board member orientation information, strategic planning information, and center usage statistics.

Documentation related to diversity and discrimination on campus in this collection include (but are not limited to) The Madison Plan; The Madison Plan 1, 2, and 3 Years Later; Plan 2008 materials; Design for Diversity; various annual reports; and responses to the 2000 doctored admissions photo controversy from students of color and the Multicultural Student Center.

A large portion of this collection consists of newspaper clippings from the mid 1980s to the early 2000s documenting the historical context for the creation of the Multicultural Student Center, including instances and articles about racism and discrimination at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Photographs from this collection are primarily of students attending Multicultural Student Center events from 1990-2006. Events include orientations, graduation ceremonies, awards ceremonies, the Ebony Ball, leadership conferences, and anniversary celebrations.
