Breta Luther Griem was born on 19 May 1897 in Kalkaska, Michigan. She graduated with
a degree in food nutrition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1918. Griem
worked as a dietitian at hospitals in Boston and Chicago. During World War II, she
became the nutrition chairwoman for the Red Cross in Milwaukee County. Griem later
worked as a consultant by planning meals for schools and nursing homes. She also
wrote numerous articles, including "Health With Your Meals" for the Milwaukee Journal in 1925-1926. A career in television
began on 1 March 1949 with the premier of Griem's cooking show "What's New in the
Kitchen", which aired on WTMJ-TV. The show ran until her retirement in June 1962,
which at the time was the longest running cooking show in the U.S. She died 5 April
1980.
