The City Plan Commission (CPC) is the City's official planning body and is
responsible for master planning activities. It was established as the City Planning
Commission by Wisconsin statute in 1909 and was known as the Board of Public Land
Commissioners from 1939 to 1960 before receiving its present name in 1961. The seven
members of the City Plan Commission are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the
Common Council to serve three-year terms. Operating within the Department of City
Development, the CPC advises the Common Council on a variety of land development
issues including zoning map changes, revisions in the zoning ordinance, subdivision
approvals, business improvement districts, street and alley closures, public land
disposition and acquisition, new streets and the approval of development plans in
certain overlay districts.
