The term Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) is used when an individual writes a letter by
hand and also signs it. If the letter is written by clerical or secretarial staff
and then signed by the individual, it is referred to as Letter Signed. Finally, if a
letter is typed and signed, this is a Typed Letter Signed. Even though all of these
types of letters are present in this collection, Milwaukee Public Library (MPL)
referred to these letters as ASL or sometimes "celebrity correspondence". MPL
collected all of these signatures from various authors, journalists, politicians,
illustrators, professors, and poets for historical purposes.
