Dr. Adell Patton, Jr. was born in Haynes, Arkansas in 1936, and died in 2017. He received
his Ph.D. in African History from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1975 before teaching at
Howard University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a career that spanned over 40
years. His research interests included African history (especially of Liberia and Nigeria),
African American history, the history of medicine, slavery, colonialism, and the back to
Africa movement.
