Gertrude E. Johnson, came to the University of Wisconsin in 1910 to set up and direct the
University's educational theater program. Subsequently, she established the first credit
courses in the oral interpretation of literature and dramatic production offered at the
University. She was a founder of the National Collegiate Players in 1922. She retired in
1945.
