Marvin Sukov papers, 1935-1971

Biography/History

Dr. Marvin Sukov (1904-1984) was a Minneapolis criminal psychiatrist and avid collector of Little Magazines. He began collecting little magazines, which are typically non-commerical and often avant-garde literary works of fiction and of poetry. In 1958, Sukov began corresponding with the UW-Madison Libraries, specifically the Director of Libraries, Louis Kaplan, and the Curator of Rare Books, Felix Pollak. It was decided that UW-Madison would acquire a majority Sukov's collection of little magazines, totalling to over 10,000 items across over 700 titles. Sukov donated and sold further issues to the library to fill in gaps in the collection throughout the 60s and 70s, with another significant donation of 650 items in 1965. Sukov stayed involved with UW-Madison Libraries until his death in 1984.
