Felix Pollak collection, 1920-1990

Scope and Content Note

The papers of Felix Pollak are arranged into 9 series. The first series, Correspondence, includes letters from poets, little magazine editors, and publishers. Of note, correspondence with Anais Nin, Henry Miller, the editor of the Elizabeth Press, and the 'Arts in Society' journal.

The second series, Sukov Collection of Little Magazines, includes all of Pollak's materials about establishing and developing the little magazine collection. This includes correspondence with Dr. Marvin Sukov, from whom the original little magazine collection originated from, and with Louis Kaplan, the director of the UW-Madison Libraries at the time. There are lists of the gifts from Sukov by year starting from 1959 until 1982. This series also includes correspondence with Frederick Hoffman, the author of the first book about little magazines. There are also editor's reactions to Hoffman and Pollak as well as notes and further materials about a 'Hoffman project'.

The third series is Research. This consists notes from Pollak's studies at the University of Vienna as well as notes on a variety of subjects including religion, the death penalty, bookbinding, and forgeries. Additional research and notes about Pollak's translations are included.

The fourth series is the Underground Press Syndicate (UPS). This includes lists of underground presses, articles and essays about underground presses, and some miscellaneous notes.

The fifth series is Biographical materials. The series includes Pollak's immigration documents, miliary pamphlets and writings, newspaper clippings, awards, and school records from Vienna. Some family correspondence is also included in this series.

The sixth series is Writings and Publications. This includes early prose and poetry from Pollak, with a significant portion written in German. There are also "Slips" and notes organized by year which include poetry drafts, miscellaneous notes, ideas, and aphorisms. Included are drafts of his poetry and books, poems arranged alphabetically by title, essays arranged alphabetically by title and by subject, translations, and reviews of Pollak's works. A large portion of this series are materials about "Aphorismen" which is short for his book, "Lebenszeichen: Aphorismen und Marginalien", including a card catalog of his working notes.

The seventh series, Lectures and Appearances, include drafts of his lectures, notes for interviews, and programs and posters for various appearances organized by date.

The eighth series is UW-Madison. This includes materials specifically relating to Pollak's time as the Curator of Rare Books. Most is correspondence about reference, acquistions, and other oridinary business. There are three logbooks kept by students in the rare book and microfilm room.

The ninth series is Media, consisting of 1/4" reels and audio casssettes. The audio recordings are of readings by Pollak, interviews, and Pollak's poetry read by others. This series also includes photographs of Pollak.
