Frederick Augustus Braun papers

Biographical / Historical

Frederick Augustus Braun (March 28, 1874-[September 2] 1915) was a professor of German at Princeton University. He had a bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri, a master's degree from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Braun grew up in Missouri, attending rural schools until age 16. He also studied in Europe, and taught German at a few high schools, as well as Missouri Valley College, and the State University of Iowa. He married Cora Florence Fisher, whom he met at University of Iowa, on August 14, 1912. Braun died of a brain tumor at his parents' home in Missouri, where he'd lived for months while hoping to recover.

In 1910 Braun published the book "Margaret Fuller and Goethe" with Henry Holt and Company. In the book's preface Braun describes Fuller as "one of America's most remarkable women," noting that "she deserves a much more honorable place in the history of the development of our thought and literature than the rather humble one which has thus far been assigned to her...". Braun then acknowledges his professor Julius Goebel, head of the Department of German at the University of Illinois, for helping him write the book and offering guidance during the process. Along with thanking other professors who played an integral role in the book's development, Braun also thanks Margaret D. Fuller's niece, Edith D. Fuller, for her assistance.
