David F. Griswold Papers, 1846-1929

Biography/History

David F. Griswold was born 26 December 1854 and died 30 June 1925. He started his career in print with the Racine Weekly Argus at the age of 18 and transferred to the Racine Journal-News, published by the Journal Printing Company, in December 1880. David Griswold was city editor of the Racine Journal-News for 44 years. He also served as a frequent correspondent for the Milwaukee Sentinel, the Chicago Herald, and the Evening Wisconsin of Milwaukee. He was elected to local offices and frequently involved in local clubs and organizations. David Griswold married Eva H. Hoyer in a small ceremony on 27 September 1895. Before their marriage, Eva Hoyer (born 19 October 1873) was chief operator for the Wisconsin Telephone Company. Eva Griswold is later listed as an employee of the Journal Printing Company on the Griswold's taxes. Mrs. Griswold died 4 May 1924 at the age of fifty.

David Griswold still worked for the Journal Printing Company when the company moved from 328 Main Street to a deep red brick building at 212 Fourth Street that is cited as a prime example of Racine's building style during the era. The Journal Printing Company series focuses on the brochures and correspondence from the preparation of the building for a modern printing office of the time. Correspondence from this series seems to be to and from Frank R. Starbuck, the Secretary-Treasurer of the Journal Printing Company at the time; or Frank W. Starbuck, the President of the company at the time
