Series: IRVIN WYLLIE (1966-1974)Biographical NoteIrvin Gordon Wyllie was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 3, 1920. He earned his BA (Magna cum laude) at Westminster College in 1941, an MA in History at Oberlin College in 1942, and a History PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1949. He married Harriet Elizabeth Fairley on September 3, 1945. The Wyllies had three children: Gordon William, Kay Ann, and Lara Sue. Dr. Wyllie began his teaching career as an instructor at the University of Maryland in 1947. From 1943 to 1957 he taught at the University of Missouri. He joined the History Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1957, and became chairman of the department in 1964. He served in that capacity for two years, and in 1966 became the first chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. He served as chancellor until his death in October 1974. Dr. Wyllie's professional activities included membership in the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the Southern Historical Association, and the American Studies Association. He served as president of the University of Missouri chapter of the American Association of University Professors in 1956-1957, as president of the Wisconsin-Northern Illinois chapter of the American Studies Association in 1959-1960, as a member of the National Executive Council of the American Studies Association 1959-1961, and as a member of the Association of American Colleges' Commission on Institutional Affairs in 1969-1972. As a Consultant-Examiner for the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools from 1968 to the time of his death, he participated in the accreditation reviews of a number of schools, including the University of Notre Dame, the University of Illinois, University of Illinois-Chicago Circle, and Wright State University. In 1969 he became a Commissioner of the North Central Association. Dr. Wyllie's publications include several articles and The Self-Made Man in America: The Myth of Rags to Riches (1954). In the 1960s he supervised the publication of several books as general editor of the American history series of Dorsey Press. Early during his years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Wyllie began the involvement in faculty governance and in administration that would lead to his appointment as the chancellor, responsible for developing a campus of the University in Southeastern Wisconsin. With Merle Curti, from 1957 to 1965, he administered a $100,000 Ford Foundation History of Philanthropy Project. He served on the Executive Committee of the Social Studies Division from 1960-1963, and on the Executive Committee of the School of Education from 1962 to 1965. His committee service included terms on the Athletic Board and the Codification Committee responsible for codifying faculty legislation. He served as Chairman of the Archives Committee and the American Institutions Committee responsible for administering an interdisciplinary social sciences and humanities major. As the first chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Dr. Wyllie oversaw the creation of its physical plant and academic programs, and the initial development of its staff. He had ultimate responsibility for Parkside's relations with other units of the University, with governing agencies such as Central Administration and the Board of Regents, state government officials and agencies, and the Southeastern Wisconsin communities served by Parkside. The General Subject File reflects all aspects of the development of Parkside from 1966 through the greater part of 1975, and all aspects of campus relations with agencies of the University System, the state, and the local communities during that period. The subject files in the Chancellor's Office were maintained after Dr. Wyllie's death, until their transfer to the Archives early in 1976. The General Subject File, therefore, encompasses the term of Otto Bauer who served as Acting Chancellor from November 1974 to September 1, 1975. The General Subject File also reflects the professional links and duties maintained by Dr. Wyllie during his chancellorship, including his work for the Dorsey Press and the North Central Association. The Chronological File covers the years 1966 through 1975 and includes the official correspondence of Acting Chancellor Otto Bauer and some official correspondence of Chancellor Alan Guskin. The Chronological File affords a more concise picture of Dr. Wyl1ie's personal involvement in many of the matters covered in the General Subject File. The Personnel File contains material relating to "inactive" personnel.
