Raymond Charles Bishop was born on a farm in Bristol, Wisconsin, located just south of the Wilmot Road on the east side of Wisconsin Highway 45. His father, Charles, was a farmer and carpenter who built the farm house where he and his wife, Mary Kingman, started their family. Bishop had four sisters: Lela, Margaret, Cora, and Emeline. Two other siblings died in infancy.
In about 1907, Bishop moved to Kenosha to attend the College of Commerce where he completed a six month accounting course. His first employment was with the Windsor Spring Company. He soon became a bookkeeper at the Chicago Brass Company (later known as the American Brass Company, then Anaconda American Brass). Bishop stayed with the company until his retirement in the early 1950s.
On August 11, 1910, he married Gretta Tillotson, and they had two sons, Homer (born 1912) and Malcolm (born 1914), and one daughter, Eloise (b. 1922). Bishop was a member of the Park Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church and served on its Board for several years. From 1917 to 1975 he kept a daily record of his family's income and expenditures.
