The role of the UW-Milwaukee Campus Health Officer is to provide consultation to any
department in regards to health related issues, formulate plans to mitigate epidemic
or pandemics on campus in collaboration with administration, provide consultancy to
UWM with health initiatives, and represent UWM with outside local, state and federal
health systems. This position also overlaps with the Director of Health and
Wellness, which involves being in strategic iniative in consultation with the
Executive Director of University Recreation, as well as Executive Director Student
Health & Wellness Center.
The position of Campus Health Officer overlap with the role of the Executive Director
of the campus Health and Wellness Center. The last building constructed by the
Milwaukee-Downer College, the Norris Health Center was acquired in 1964 when UWM
purchased the campus after. In addition to serving as the health center for both
schools, the Norris Health Center housed UWM’s School of Nursing until the school
moved to Cunningham Hall in 1973. The building was named for Professor Robert E.
Norris, a faculty member and chairman of the Department of Mathematics and UWM’s
first Dean of Student Affairs. It was dedicated to his memory in 1972. In September
2022, the center was moved to the Northwest Quadrant of campus and changed its name
to the Student Health and Wellness Center.
The Campus Health Officer oversees the wellness of students, running the Health and
Wellness Center, formerly Norris Health Center, overseeing correspondence with
faculty, staff and students about outbreaks in the Milwaukee area that could affect
the student population, and ensuring that the UW-Milwaukee campus was up to date on
information about health practices on campus.
