The Chicago, North Shore, and Milwaukee Railroad, often called the North Shore Line,
was an interurban railroad line that operated between Chicago, Illinois, and
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, until was abandoned in 1963. It was founded in 1891 as the
Waukegan & North Shore Rapid Transit Company, a streetcar line in Waukegan,
Illinois. After several reorganizations it became the Chicago and Milwaukee Electric
Railroad and then finally the Chicago, North Shore, and Milwaukee Railroad in 1916.
The line ran through Chicago's wealthy north shore communities along Lake Michigan,
including Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, and Highland Park. The line
continued through Highwood, home of the railroad's headquarters and main shops, and
through Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, North Chicago, and Waukegan, finally entering
Wisconsin with stops at Kenosha and Racine, and its northern end in Milwaukee.
